Argentina

Overview

Argentina stretches 4,000 km from its sub-tropical north to the sub-Antarctic south. It is a country of dramatic contrasts. Its terrain includes part of the Andes mountain range, marshlands, the plains of the Pampas and a long coastline. More than a third of the population live in and around the capital, Buenos Aires, leaving the rest of the country sparsely inhabited.

‍

Argentines are descended from a vibrant mix of Spanish, Italian, Arab, Jewish and Welsh immigrants, and they pride themselves on giving visitors a warm welcome.

‍

With so much variety on offer you ideally need a whole month to explore this wonderful country, but many of our routes can be condensed into a shorter two week trip if that is the time you have available. From icebergs and glaciers to lakes, mountains, marshlands, Pampa and waterfalls – Argentina has it all and we absolutely love it.

‍

We have routes in the north, southeast and west, routes into Chile. While a good knowledge of Spanish is undoubtedly useful, it isn’t a pre-requisite and as long as you are prepared to make an effort then we will arm you with some of the key phrases which you may need and our in country representatives are always on hand should you need their help.

When to go

January

27°C
15mm

High summer equals high visitor season in Patagonia and the Lake District. The North West is usually very warm and wet. Iguazu Falls will be hot.

February

28°C
17mm

Warm to hot almost everywhere, bar Patagonia which is always ‘four seasons in one day’. Expect high rainfall in the jungley North West.

March

24°C
20mm

Great month for travelling around Argentina. All regions accessible. Possibly our favourite time for our Classic Patagonia self-drive. Autumn colours in the Lake District.

April

19°C
41mm

Another favourite month to visit all areas, especially to see Patagonia with less visitors and the vineyards of Mendoza and Cafayate, plus Salta area.

‍

May

18°C
69mm

The Ibera Wetlands becomes less humid at this time of year, although rain should be expected year round in this north eastern corner.

June

17°C
93mm

In late June the Southern Right whales tend to arrive to the Valdes Peninsula.

July

17°C
84mm

Can be a busy time as locals take mid-winter holidays. Start of the ski season in Bariloche.

August

17°C
78mm

Due to the altitude it will be cold, but this is a great month to drive in the Puna; most accessible from Salta or Tucuman.

September

19°C
40mm

Go to Iguazu Falls for a quieter experience. Patagonia 'opens’ up towards the end of the month with weather starting to improve as spring arrives.

October

20°C
30mm

Head to the Valdes Peninsula for superb marine wildlife. Thousands of Magellan Penguins arrive in the area around now and move off in March.

November

23°C
14mm

Lovely time to be in the Lake District and to venture further south to see the magnificent Perito Moreno glacier, near El Calafate.

December

26°C
18mm

Tierra del Fuego should be experienced when the days are longer and so head to Ushuaia around now or January.

What to see

Lake District

The Lake District has some ofArgentina’s most beautiful scenery with shimmering lakes and jagged peaks. It is a paradise for hiking, fishing, rafting, riding or just driving through the stunning landscape. On the shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi, Bariloche is the centre of Argentina's Lake District. There is an Alpine feel to the town, with timber and local stone buildings making up the historic centre. The classic 7 Lakes Road between San Martinde los Andes and Bariloche will take you past some hidden gems in forested valleys with numerous options for hikes to stretch your legs or even swim in some of the quieter lakeside bays.

North West

Argentina's northwest is culturally closer to the Andean cultures of Bolivia and Peru than the European influenced south. Sliding down from the Andes in the east, the region is a mosaic of parched terracotta deserts, blinding white salt flats and lush green tobacco plantations dotted with colonial adobe villages. The region's show stoppers are geology at its finest (the Puna) and as if it couldn’t get any better, the region is also home to the world's highest vineyards, an area mooted as the next Napa Valley?

Valdes Peninsula

If you want to increase your chances of seeing southern right whales, penguins, sea lions, dolphins and elephant seals then Argentina’s Atlantic coast is where you need to come. Puerto Madryn and Peninsula Valdés fringe the Atlantic coast, in the northern reaches of Patagonia. The city of Puerto Madryn was founded by a group of Welsh immigrants in 1865 and has grown steadily ever since. It overlooks the sheltered waters of Golfo Nuevo and is one of the best places to see whales in Argentina - in particular, southern right whales, which visit the bay each year between June and December to breed.

Buenos Aires

With its elegant architecture and fashion-conscious inhabitants, Buenos Aires is often seen as more European than South American.  It is a cosmopolitan city, often referred to as the ‘Paris of South America’, with many different areas for you to explore. Often a trip to Argentina is book-ended with nights in the city and in this case we would encourage you to stay in different areas at the beginning and end of your stay to experience as much as possible.
