Northwest Argentina

Overview

There are some wonderful estancias (farms) in Argentina and this itinerary is an adventurous, high altitude at times, one way journey from Tucuman to Salta which takes in some superb estancias where you will be welcomed like family. Even if you are not a rider you will appreciate the stunning scenery, traditional architecture and country ways of life. If you are a horse rider then you will be in heaven! This area is also wine country and the opportunity to sample Malbec and Torrentes is too good to miss.

Route

Itinerary

Location 1

Hub Porteno, Buenos Aires

Day 1 & 2

On arrival in Buenos Aires you will be met and privately transferred to your hotel in stylish Recoleta for the next two nights. Here you will have your briefing and have time to explore the city. We recommend a walking tour with a guide this morning, as most flights land in the early morning, with normal check not possible until at least midday. Indeed there are various activities that can be booked in advance, which we can arrange for you.

Location 2

Estancia Zarate, nr Trancas

Day 3 & 4

This morning you fly to Tucuman where you will collect your vehicle and drive to Estancia Zarate. Here you will have a full day to enjoy estancia activities - horse-riding & cattle work being the main ones. All experiences of rider can be catered for. With a talented chef you will eat superbly well here also.

‍

Location 3

Estancia Pampa Grande, Guachipas

Day 5 & 6

Enjoy a very scenic drive as you make your way between estancias. Pampa Grande is a very special place. Here you can go swimming in the pool or lake, enjoy riding, mountain-biking or hiking. Much of the food here is grown locally, so you can expect simply delicious and fresh meals.

Location 4

Vinas de Cafayate, Cafayate

Day 7

Heading back into a town you will enter the wine-making area where there will be plenty of opportunity for wine-making tours. Enjoy more impressive 'red rock' scenery along the way.

Location 5

Estancia Colome

Day 8 & 9

Today you follow the Calchaqui river valley, passing more stunning landscapes and small colonial towns which have been well-preserved. The road continues along the Quebrada de las Flechas (Gorge of Arrows) with its impressive geological formations produced by the erosion of the colourful sandstone over the past 60 million years. Tonight you will actually be staying in a working vineyard, a very special one where there is also a contemporary art exhibition which we can't recommend highly enough.

Location 6

Finca La Paya, nr Cachi

Day 10 & 11

Another great drive today as you head on through Molinos and reach your next stop which is located out in the countryside, just a short drive from the pretty town of Cachi. There is lots to do in this area.

Location 7

Finca Las Marguaritas, Chicoana

Day 12

Enjoy another great drive through Los Cardones National Park, followed by the descent of the Bishop's Pass with its fair share of hairpin bends.

Location 8

Manantial del Silencio, Purmurmarca

Day 13 & 14

Enjoy a big day of driving today, much of it at altitude as you head to Purmurmarca. Then enjoy a full day to explore the Quebrada de Humahuaca.

Day 15 & 16

Take the scenic Yungas road south to Salta. Your vehicle will be collected today and you are free to explore this friendly city on foot.
