Mesopotamia

Overview

Mesopotamia is the tropical and green region of Northeast Argentina comprising of Misiones, Corrientes and Entre Rios provinces. Its name, meaning “between the rivers” in Greek, is derived from its being located between the Paraná River (on the southwest to north) and the Uruguay River (on the southeast to northeast). On this special self-drive journey you will travel from cosmopolitan Buenos Aires to the open wetlands of Iberá to the dense Atlantic Forest, via impressive Jesuit ruins and culminating with the incredible waterfalls of Iguazú. This itinerary would combine well with Mendoza (flying direct from Iguazu) or with any of our Brazil road trips.

Itinerary

Location 1

Hotel Mio, Recoleta

Days 1 & 2

Upon arrival in Buenos Aires you will be met and privately transferred to your hotel in Recoleta for the next 2 nights. If your flight arrives in the early morning then we include a guided walking tour for two hours to introduce you to the part of this exciting city where you will be staying. The next day enjoy a guided half day tour of the city. Whilst in the city you will be briefed on your self drive journey ahead.

Location 2

La Alondra'i, gateway to the Ibera Wetlands

Days 3 & 4

Take an internal flight to Corrientes where you will collect your rental vehicle. Drive towards Concepción del Yaguareté Corá, a traditional town closely connected with the gaucho culture and the wetlands. Two nights at the superb La Alondra'i for full immersion into the culture, traditions and hospitality of Corrientes. Ever fancied riding a horse into town to visit some museums? Well you can do it here!

The next day explore the Iberá Wetlands with a full day devoted to the landscapes and wildlife of Iberá, one of South America’s great freshwater wetland systems. The wetlands provide habitat for capybaras, caimans, marsh deer and a remarkable variety of birds. This is also a region where conservation initiatives have helped restore native species and habitats.

Location 3

Estancia Ibera

Days 5 & 6

Travel across Corrientes towards Carlos Pellegrini, one of the principal gateways to the Iberá Wetlands. The changing scenery of grasslands, lagoons and marshes reveals the scale of this extraordinary ecosystem.

The next day spend the day immersed in the environment surrounding Estancia Iberá, observing the wildlife and appreciating this distinctive region of Argentina and estancia life.

Location 4

Estancia Santa Inés

Days 7 & 8

Leave Iberá and travel towards Misiones, stopping at Establecimiento Las Marías to discover the production of yerba mate, a drink deeply rooted in everyday Argentine and Guaraní culture. Continue to the charming Estancia Santa Inés where you will be based for the next two nights.

Enjoy a peaceful time here discovering the grounds and the history of the property.

Location 5

Moconá Lodge

Days 9 & 10

Travel north-east through Misiones, stopping at San Ignacio Miní, one of the best-preserved Jesuit missions in Argentina and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Continue through the province, stopping for lunch and tea before reaching your lodge for the next two nights. A lodge surrounded by forest, part of the rich Atlantic Forest ecosystem that characterises eastern Misiones.

A full day at the lodge with a boat trip to the Saltos del Moconá (local conditions permitting).

Location 6

Puerto Bemberg Posada

Days 11 & 12

After lunch at Moconá, drive towards Puerto Bemberg, a historic estate overlooking the Paraná River. E-bikes and mountain bikes are available for guests, and we particularly recommend taking advantage of them: it's a great way to explore the estate’s forest paths and experience the surrounding Atlantic Forest at a gentler pace.

Next day perhaps take a scenic boat trip to the beautiful Yasy Falls.

Location 7

Entre Árboles, nr Iguazú National Park

Day 13

Drive to Iguazú National Park and discover the incredible waterfalls from its network of walkways. The Upper and Lower Circuits offer contrasting views of the cascades, while Garganta del Diablo reveals the force of the Iguazú River.

After a full and memorable day at the Falls make your way to your accommodation for tonight.
