Lake District (Argentina & Chile)

Overview

Combining Argentina & Chile this is a beautiful self drive route. Stunning scenery in the form of mountains, volcanoes, virgin forests, and lakes wherever you look will mean it is hard to keep your eyes on the road! All this sandwiched between stays in the exciting cities of Buenos Aires and Santiago. From Santiago you could consider add-ons to Patagonia or the Atacama Desert.

Itinerary

Location 1

Cassa Lepage Art Hotel, Buenos Aires

Day 1 & 2

Upon arrival in Buenos Aires you will be met and privately transferred to your hotel in Monserrat, a neighbourhood that is part of the historic centre of Buenos Aires for the next 2 nights. If your flight arrives in the early morning then we recommend a guided walking tour for a fews hours to introduce you to your area of this exciting city. Enjoy a city tour, a dinner & tango show or perhaps a half day boat cruise in the Tigre Delta. You will also be briefed on your self drive journey whilst in Buenos Aires.

Location 2

Hotel Rio Hermoso, San Martin de los Andes

Day 3 & 4

Fly Buenos Aires to Bariloche. On arrival you will collect your vehicle and drive north the short distance (a few hours) along the Valle Encantado to Lake Meliquina. Based for 2 nights at this lovely lodge. Enjoy exploring the nearby Lanin National Park and Lake Huechulaufquen.

Location 3

& Beyond's Vira Vira, Pucon

Day 5 & 6

Drive northwest to near Pucon and cross the border into Chile for a two night treat of a stay in this most scenic of areas. The hacienda-style boutique hotel is stylish, with tremendous fresh food and a superb range of seasonal activities to suit everyone. This is a top of the range hotel, but there are some other great places to stay in the area which are slightly kinder to the pocket.

Location 4

Casa Molino, Puerto Varas

Day 7 & 8

Drive south today to the Puerto Varas area, followed by a day to relax and enjoy the views to Lake Llanquihue, plus the Osorno & Tronodor volcanoes.

Location 5

Cabanas Caleta Gonzalo, nr Chaiten

Day 9

An adventurous day as your route takes you on two ferry crossings. It is a full day of travel, but fun too! You could easily spend 2 nights here as there is lots to do in the area, but for the purposes of this itinerary there is just 1 night.

Location 6

Uman Lodge, Futaleufu

Day 10 & 11

Continue along the epic Carretera Austral to Futaleufu. Thereafter you can revel in a full day of activities to enjoy as you wish. These include rafting, hiking all in stunning surroundings.

Today cross the border back into Argentina - not a big drive. Visit Los Alerces National Park, perhaps consider a trek to the Torrecillas Glaciar.
